Safeway is a Fortune 100 company and one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America, posting annual sales of $43.6 billion in 2011. At the end of 2011, we operated 1,678 stores in the Western, Southwestern, Rocky Mountain, Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States and in Western Canada. We have prime store locations in some of the fastest-growing areas of both countries. In support of our stores, Safeway has an extensive network of distribution, manufacturing and food processing facilities. Of particular interest to time-pressed shoppers, our stores are conveniently located within a few miles of their homes on easily accessible sites with ample parking.
Property Development Centers (PDC) is a wholly owned subsidiary specializing in retail shopping center development and capitalizing on Safeway’s real estate core competency. PDC projects are concentrated in Safeway’s urban and suburban markets with high barriers to entry. PDC creates value by obtaining entitlements, transforming centers and leasing retail space to third parties.
Property Development Associates (PDA) is a division of Safeway. Its primary functions are leasing and disposition of Safeway-owned shopping centers and surplus properties, acquisitions of Safeway leasehold positions, valuation services and property management of Safeway owned centers and other properties. At the end of 2011, PDA’s portfolio contains approximately 11 million square feet, consisting of roughly 6 million square feet of surplus properties and 5 million square feet of shopping centers with nearly 400 tenants in Safeway-owned properties.
